Kiyoni grunted when he took the blow to the stomach. He growled and fought back blindly, his vision almost too blurry to see Max at all. With each blow to the head, he felt more and more dazed, but he wouldn't show it. "What? This your new girl now that my cousin's dead? She's pretty good looking, got a nice rack, too." he said, bluntly, looking Cailin over. "Helena would be disappointed. She wrote you a cute little letter and everything. You should have seen the look on her face while she was dying..." He took the ring Max had given her out of his pocket along with the letter and started reading. "Dear Max..."
Cailin was still on the ground, but she shrank against the opposite wall from the two fighting boys as soon as that Conlon boy from school had showed up out of nowhere. She was trembling and her heart was pounding from the adrenaline rush mixed with the slightest bit of fear. Unable to make herself move, she watched the scene before her, not having a clue what the heck they were talking about, but getting the impression that the guy in the black jacket who had attacked her was a lunatic.

"SHUT UP!" Max roared, pulling Kiyoni up by the hair, and shoving his face into the brick wall behind him, he looked over his shoulder at Cailin for a moment, she looked terrified. He turned back to Kiyoni, he thrust him backwards into the wall and snatched the letter and ring from him. He looked at Cailin and threw the ring and letter at her, "Watch dis fah me.." he drug Kiyoni into the nearest building, throwing him in, following , but not before locking the door behind him.

Kiyoni's face was bleeding, but he was laughing maniacally, even as Max dragged him off into the building.
Cailin caught the letter and ring, horrified at the sight of the guy's face after it hit the brick wall. She had a feeling that he was about to die, but she didn't even want to think about it. Staying put and pulling her scraped knees up to her chest, she looked down at the ring in her hand, examining it for a moment and then staring at the folded up piece of paper in her other hand with "Max" scrawled on the front in what looked like a girl's rushed handwriting. Out of respect, she didn't dare open it. Cailin wasn't the type of girl to invade someone's privacy, but she couldn't help wondering how these two guys were connected and who this Helena was that they had been talking about. Shaking the thoughts from her head, she waited.

(WARNING, VIOLENCE AND BLOOD AHEAD!) Max stood there, his chest heaving from all the fighting, he pulled out the switch he carried in his pocket, especially with where he'd been staying lately. He looked at it, his eyes getting a deadly look as he looked at it and back at Kiyoni, that combined with the dark circles made him look terrifying. He rushed Kiyoni, bringing the knife up to his throat, and cramming his fist into his mouth, feeling the skin on his knuckles go back, but he didn't care, he had to shut him up, "How do you like it?" he whispered, his voice steely and full of hatred, " HUH? OH I FORGOT I CAN'T HEAR YOU!" he pulled his fist out and used the knife to cut Kiyoni's cheek open from the corner to as far as he could pull it, "Ya know...I read in dis book...dey'd do that..but stop and torture them and make 'em rip dere own face open....let's test it?" he shoved Kiyoni into an old chair that was there, he used his knee to keep him from getting up, putting all his weight into it, then slit the other side of his mouth open, enjoying the muffled scream that errupted from the other, watching the skin rip further up the mouth. He ripped Kiyoni's shirt open, then dug the switch into his stomach, cutting horizontally, "Yeah...Jack da Ripper used dis...but not dis.." he pushed the knife up in a T, like one would on an autopsy, he pulled a bandana out of his back pocket and shoved it into Kiyoni's mouth, blood was dripping down the boy's face from the wounds he'd inflicted on his cheeks, and dripped out of the fresh one's he was working on now,
"If I wanted to I'd go ahead and rip ya heart out...but wait..douche bags like you don' got one," he popped a rib with the hilt of the knife, getting it stuck there, "Dammit...gimme dat back," he punched Kiyoni across the face, then pulled the knife out like a twisted King Arthur. He stoof back, admiring the work, he was shaking violently, blood gushing from everywhere possible, Max pulled the bandana out of his mouth, tying it around his mouth and making it tight against the Glasgow smile he'd inflicted.
Max finally grew tired of the torture, he was shaking himself, he wiped his forhead, then found a sink and started washing all the blood off of him and the knife, he came back in there and examined Kiyoni, he swung the towel he'd used around and around, then came up behind Kiyoni and sneered, "Heah..lemme put you outta ya misery...JUST.LIKE.YOU.DID.HER!" he pulled back with the towel on Kiyoni's throat, if the wounds didn't kill him, this would, he pulled until Kiyoni went limp, then checked for a pulse, he'd seen many horror movies where they hadn't checked the pulse. Once satisfied, Max disposed of the towel, checked himself over for blood and left the room back to the alleyway, he shoved stuff in front of the door, pretty soon it looked like any normal alley way wall. He looked at Cailin, still shaking, then collapsed against the wall, the withdrawl and over exertion catching up with him.

Cailin could hear the screams inside the building and she tried to block them out, getting a bit nauseous. Then the screaming stopped and she knew the deed had been done. She took a deep breath trying to make her stomach stop turning. As she watched the Conlon boy walk back out and barricade the door from the outside, it dawned on her that she had heard the name Helena tossed around at school earlier that day, but she couldn't really remember when she'd heard it or what the people had said about her. She usually tuned other people out when she was in a place where she didn't know anyone. Unsure of what to do, she put her hand on his shoulder. "Are...you alright?" she asked, knowing it must sound stupid to him, but not really knowing what else to say.

Max looked at her, slightly shocked she'd stuck around, "I'm fine...just a lil' woiked over," he said, it'd been a very rough couple of weeks, and everything was finally catch up with him, the drugs, the death, the arguments with Spot, killing Kiyoni, "But I don' wanna be around heah fah long," he balanced himself into a standing position, then looked at the girl, "Listen. I'm...ah..I'm sorry ya had ta see all dat.." he said awkwardly, rubbing the back of his head, he knew he looked rough, he felt rough. he caught site of the letter, surprised she hadn't opened it. "Dere's a reason fah all of it...but let's get outta heah first..." he said, knowing he owed her an explanation.

Cailin smiled, unable to help herself. "It's...okay. I'm not exactly as sheltered as I probably look." she said, her eyes gleaming. "I only live a block away from here if you want to go there. It's messy because we just moved in, but you look like you could use a place to rest for a while. It's the least I could do. Thanks by the way... " She handed him the letter and the ring. "You okay to walk?"

"If it's closest," Max said, hoping her parents weren't home, oh look, I found this kid on the street? Can I keep him? Max smirked a little thinking about that. He took the letter and the ring, feeling a slight sinking feeling to look at it, "thanks," he said, still looking at the letter, one of the last things he had of Helena's, "no problem, " he smiled slightly, he looked himself over when she asked if he was okay to walk, he was still shaking slightly, and he felt like his knees would buckle any minute, but he wasn't about to tell her that, "I should be, ya house can't be dis far if you walked."

Cailin brushed herself off, forgetting about the groceries as she lead Max out of the alleyway and turned right, heading toward home. Both of her knees were bleeding from the concrete and she could feel bruises forming on her exposed uppser arms where the other guy had grabbed her, but she ignored that, walking as if nothing had happened. The only sign she gave off that she had just been attacked was her shaking hands. She knew her dad would be pissed if he found out. No one messed with his little girl.

Max followed her, keeping an eye out for any other little surprises. A small voice in the back of his head was screaming about how he'd just killed someone, and he shouldn't be fine with it, he should be freaking out and praying the cops didn't find the corpse. He shrugged it off, he'd done everything possible to keep someone from finding him or finding out Max was the one who did him in. Max saw the house as they approached...
Something reeked of Mafia here, and he hoped it wasn't the Italian, his dad had pissed them off one too many times, and the Conlon name wasn't very appreciated. He stared "So uh....what does ya dad do? ...Exactly?" he asked, following her up to the front door.

Cailin looked at him. "He owns the new liquor store a few streets over," she answered. The job's pay didn't really fit the house, she knew, but she wasn't about to tell a stranger that her dad was second in command of the Irish mafia for two reasons: 1) She didn't want everyone at her new school being afraid to talk to her like last time and 2) This town was overrun by Italian mafia and if they found out she and her father were there, even though they were not on Italian territory and neither was the liquor store, the Italians would probably get angry and think the Irish were trying to move in on them.

"Uh-huh," he said, not really believing that, he had a bit of a feeling of what her dad did, but he wasn't going to mention it. He looked himself over, finally realizing how much of a hobo he looked, he was dirty all over, and smelled of cheap hotel and whatever that alley way did, "Uh...is it okay if I use ya shower?" he asked, "I know I look terrible, an' yeah.." he was still shaking too, it wasn't as tremor-like as it had been earlier in the day, but he still was going mad for a hit. "Then I'll explain everything, I promise."

"Yeah sure," Cailin said, leading him to down the hall. "Do you want something to... oh crap! I forgot the groceries. Oh well... I'll just get dad to get them on his way home." She stopped at the bathroom. "Towels and everything are in that little closet. Let me know if you need anything else." She smiled and walked out, pulling the door closed behind her and walking back into the kitchen. Picking up the house phone, she dialed her father's work number and listened to the phone ring until his thick Irish accent came over the phone.
Desmond was just about to leave to come home and leave his store in the hands of a few new recruits that he had been training (in more than one way), when the phone on the desk in tha back room rang. He walked over to the phone and picked it up. "Hello?"
"Hey Daddy," Cailin said.
"Hey sweethear', how was school todey?" Desmond asked, hoping she was still doing okay with the move.
"It was fine, Dad. Listen, I need you to stop by the store and get some groceries for dinner tonight." she said. "You can get things to make whatever you want and I'll cook tonight."
"Okey, I'll stop by on my wey from work. I'm about ta leave righ' now," he said. "Wha' happened? I though' you were goin' ta get groceries after school?"
"I...sort of got attacked by some weird guy in an alleyway." she said, dreading his reaction to the statement. "I'll tell you more about it when you get home."
"WHA'?!" Desmond said angrily, then started spouting off in Gaelic.
Cailin understood every word he said and then started speaking in Gaelic back, trying to calm him down. When she finally got his raging down to a muttering, she added. "By the way, we have a guest who is hopefully joining us for dinner. Just wanted to let you know ahead of time. I'll see you when you get home. Love you."
"Love you too, sweethear'." Desmond said, still muttering in Gaelic as he hung up the phone.
Cailin shook her head, laughing to herself as she hung up the phone. She stood there by the kitchen counter, looking down at the engraved silver picture frame beside the phone. It was her favorite picture and they had not made a place for it in the living room yet, so they had put it here. She reached down and ran her fingers over the engraving that read "Desmond and Mealla", then looked up at the picture of her father and her pregnant mother standing on the beach. They looked so in love and seeing the picture made Cailin smile every time.

Max stood there finally figuring out the shower and turned it on, he pulled his shirt off, staring at himself in the mirror, the most the drugs had done to him was make him look slimmer, he still had his abs from before, his once tan skin had a slight sickly pallor to them, making him look worse than he already was. He remembered Helena's letter, pulling it out of his pocket and unfolding it as the bathroom got steamier. . .

"Dear Max, If you're reading this, I didn't make it. Kiyoni called me a few minutes ago and told me he was coming for me and I can hear him outside of my room right now. I barricaded the door but I don't know how long it will hold. There are just a few things I wanted to tell you in case the worst happens. First of all, I love you so much Max. You are the only thing that has kept me going these past few years, especially since mom died. I don't want you to blame yourself in any way if something happens to me because it's not your fault. I don't want you to beat yourself up over something that you couldn't prevent. You've already done everything for me just by being there. Max, you mean the world to me and I don't want you to dwell on it if something does happen. You can let me go and move on, I know you have what it takes and I don't want you to be held back by my memory. Live your life to it's fullest and I know one day you will love someone else. It's going to be okay. You're going to be okay. The door is splintering... I love you... -Helena."
