"Yeah... " Cailin said, startled at the question. She had a feeling that Max had already put the pieces together, but she didn't let on. "He's paranoid..." she added truthfully. Her dad was the most paranoid person she'd ever met. "I hope he won't run you off. But at least he likes you." She looked back up at Max and smiled again.

Cailin looked over at the radishes Max had been cutting. "That's perfect." she said, then handed him a carrot, going back to the tomato she had been dicing, making one wrong move and slicing her finger open. She drew a sharp breath and clenched her teeth together, jerking her hand back and dropping the knife on the counter.

Max saw and turned the sink on, "heah.." he guided her over and stuck her finger under the cold water, grabbing a dish towel off of the front of the stove. "heah. hold this on it." he said, handing her the dish towel.

"Thanks," Cailin said gratefully. "I'm such a klutz... Dad says I get it from Mom's side of the family." she laughed faintly.

Max smirked, pulling back and finishing up the stuff for the salad while Cailin fixed her finger. The smell of the steaks were driving him insane as they seemed to seep through the sliding glass doors. He hadn't felt this hungry in weeks, hoping it was a sign that the withdrawls were ebbing away slowly. Usually food was the last thing he thought of.

Cailin wrapped a band aid around her finger.
Desmond walked in and saw her bandaging it. "Swee' damn, child! I can' turn me back for ten minutes without ye gettin' hurt!"
Cailin laughed. "Just a little cut. I wasn't paying attention to what I was doing."
Desmond put some of the dinner rolls in the oven to cook. "Steaks are almos' ready." he said, going back out to get them while the bread cooked.
Cailin started setting the table, glancing up at Max every once in a while and smiling. No matter what the voice in her head told her, she just couldn't resist his charm.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Spot had been thinking all day. As much as he hated awkward apologies, he knew he owed one to Max. His brother had been in a dark place for the past two weeks and Spot's anger was probably the last thing he'd needed. Spot hadn't felt right since he'd left Max in Vernon's office the day before. The stars shone bright as he laid out on the roof of the treehouse for the second night in a row. It wasn't too late yet, so he was trying to decide whether to go home tonight or wait until tomorrow to face Max.
(( I fixed your seperating thing, because it's early for me and it threw me off XD cause the squigglys were intruding on Cailin and Spot was on the other side doing the intruding with the squigglies. I hope you don't mind.))
Max stifled a laugh at what Desmond said, "Yeah Cailin," he joked softly, smiling at her. He watched her move over to set the table, he felt horrible for being attracted to her, especially since Helena had just died, but he couldn't help it. He pulled the ring out of his pocket, looking it over, he'd given it to her on one of their anniversaries, after saving whatever money it was he could come up with, it was just a cheap thing, from a conveinient store that sold jewelery out the back door, but he'd wanted her to have it.
(( I don't mind XD but that statement is very confusing lol. I had to read it a couple of times to understand what the heck you were saying hahaha. But yeah, thanks cause I didn't notice it doing that last night >.< ))
After dinner, Cailin collected the dishes and took them over to the sink, filling it with warm soapy water to wash the few there were.
Desmond went into his office upstairs to place a phone call to his boss, leaving Max and Cailin alone.
"Dad already trusts you," Cailin said, smiling over at Max. "He usually hovers when I have guy friends over. My last boyfriend wouldn't even come anywhere near our old house because of it. Dad HATED him. He took him upstairs the first time he ever came over and showed him his gun collection." She laughed, remembering how the boy, Chad, had nearly fell down the stairs trying to get the heck out of the house. Served him right... she thought, remembering what Jess had told her about him cheating on her.
Max laughed, "An' it didn' take 'em long eidah," he said, which he found shocking, most girls dad's thought he was a bum, or out to steal all their money, and their daughters virginity. "Yeah..I don' need to see a gun collection...I'll be fine," he looked at the clock, his mind going back to Spot again, wondering if he needed to find him, or if he even knew he was missing all this time.
Cailin noticed him looking at the clock. "Do you need to leave?" she asked, drying her hands on the towel by the sink. It was getting a bit late, but not too much so.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Spot was still at the treehouse, debating with himself. He finally got up to start for home, deciding to talk to Max tonight. It would be nice to sleep in his own bed anyway. Pulling on his hat, he stood up and hopped down onto the floor of the treehouse, the part he'd landed on cracking under his weight and sending him down into a small pile of boards on the ground below. Cursing up a storm, he moved everything to make sure nothing was broken, thankful that the whole thing hadn't come crashing down with him, just part of the platform. The wood was old, so it didn't really surprise him that it had splintered. His back ached and he thought a few ribs had broken, but he stood up and started walking for home anyway, walking a little more slowly than usual, but making it.

"I probably should.." Max said, he looked back at her, "You okay though?" he asked, " Even aftah dis afternoon?" he didn't want to leave without making sure she'd be okay, then he'd head out, see if he could get into the house without waking up Damon.

"Yeah, I'm fine." Cailin said, grinning. "I can drive you home if you show me the way. I don't want you to have to walk..."

"Nah, I can walk," Max said, not wanting to risk Damon hearing the car pull up, "It ain't dat far."
