Elphaba Thropp shoved her glasses up her nose and narrowed her eyes at the looming facade of Shiz University. Her father was forcing her to attend the school to look after her younger sister Nessarose, who'd been in a wheelchair since birth. The entire train ride to the Emerald City, and the entire carriage ride to Shiz, all she'd heard was her father snipping at her to make sure she kept a close watch on Nessa. It was always "Nessa this" or "Nessa that" with her father. He cared more about her than about Elphaba.

Galinda sat on her luggage, staring up at the University, she was excited, okay, ecstatic. She finally stood up,smiling at the building and swishing into the school, her blonde curls bouncing as she went, the suitcases bouncing against her thighs.

"Don't forget Elphaba," her father, Governor of Muchkinland, began saying as they walked into the main foyer of Shiz.
"I'm only here to look after Nessa. I remember, Father," Elphaba assured him, masking the pain and hurt in her eyes behind a veil of indifference and what appeared to be gratitude that she would, yet again, be just a bystander while the world focused on beautiful, helpless, not green Nessarose Thropp.
Their father looked at her before he left. The corners of his mouth pulled into his cheeks slightly, as though he were about to give her a small smile to show how much he appreciated her giving up any life she may have had - Yeah right, Elphaba thought bitterly, like a walking talking avocado can have a social life - to watch after her younger sister. But, almost as quickly as they pulled up, the corners of his mouth pulled right back down into his frustrated frown he frequently wore. "I'll see you at the holidays," he said, planted a final kiss on Nessa's forehead, and left the school. Elphaba watched him go, pretending not to care about the other students who were staring at her.
