"Yeah," Race said, "Ya shoulda seen him in da strike last year.." he grinned, raising his eyebrows in Jack's direction.
Jack shook his head, "Gah..ya gonna make her think I's got an ego 'a sumthin."

Sheridan thought about what race had said. Her parents had heard about the strike they had said it would never work considering its leaders as nothing more than stupid street children and when Sheridan had sympathized with their cause her parents had told her she simply could not understand such matters.... Sheridan had been very happy when the strike had had an effect.

Jack finished off his drink, looking up at the clock, "Gate's fixin' ta open," he turned his gaze to Sheridan, "You still wanna sell wit me this time?" he asked, smiling.
Race looked, "I think I'mma hit up Sheepshead...dey got an aftahnoon run tahday," he said, checking his pockets to make sure he had enough money, like it mattered, he'd bet on the ponies anyway.

Sheridan nodded at jack accepting his offer but as race spoke she likened and wondered what sheepshed was. She assumed it was a horse racing track.... she decided she would ask jack later.

Jack led her to the door, opening it for her, "So how'd Race tell ya how to sell?" Jack asked, shoving his hands in his pockets and walking beside her. He was used to showing new newsies how to sell, he had lost count of how many he'd taught, often times another newsie got aholt of them first, and had their own way of selling, Jack had pretty much mastered selling, one of the reasons he was the Manhattan Leader.

Sheridan followed jack to the door. "He showed me how to exaggerate head lines a bit." She answed wondering if all newsies did that or just Race.

Jack laughed, "That's one way ta do it," he said, grinning, he led her through the different streets and a couple of alleyways to the distribution center. Not many sold in the afternoon's but Jack made sure he did, in case a new one wandered up and needed help, or Weasel tried to jip someone out of their papers."Alot of times some headlines gotta be stretched, like if dere's a small fire somewhere, make it an inferno, or use woids like maniac, corpse, lovenest, if it sparks interest, use it." the gates finally opened and he headed in, motioning for her to follow him, alot of the usual waved at him, he just waved back, hopping up in front of Weasel, "Heya Mr. Weasel," he said grinning,
"Cowboy it's...oi..nevermind, how many?"
"Eh...about.." Jack feigned thinking, " I did a hundred dis morning, gimme fifty," he scooted the money across the counter, getting the stack, he maneuvered them onto his shoulder, waiting for Sheridan, he wanted to see if she could handle Weasel, normally he'd help her pay, but since Race had helped her earlier that morning he'd see how she handled the money.

Sheridan looked over at jack deciding it ould be best to copy him. She turned and grined at the man behind the counter. "Weasal, 50 paps."

Mr. Weisel stared, "Yeah...and who're you?" he grunted.
"She's a friend weasel, she's gunna start sellin' papes from now on dat okay with you?" Jack came up behind her, staring at Weasel through the window.
"As long as she's got the money," he took her money and slid the fifty to her, "Just hope she sells 'em Cowboy."
"Yeah yeah...have a good day too Weasel.." Jack responded, leading Sheridan back through the gate, "Ignore him..he's had a rod up his rear end for years.."

Jack laughed, "Nah..he's always been dat way, he led her through the crowds in the markets, stopping at a corner in the midst of it all in front of a music shop, he set his papers down in front of him and picked one up, glancing through the headlines, "Alright...ya gotta find one dat you can manipulate, like dis one...animal bones found in alleyway..sounds everyday enough right? Well...den ya do dis..." he flung the newspaper above his head and yelled, "BODY FOUND IN ALLEYWAY BEFUDDLES MANHATTAN POLICE!" a crowd of people descended on Jack and Sheridan, thrusting money at them from everywhere for a paper.

Sheridan sold about half her papers on that one line. She started to look for another like Jack showed her to manipulate but suddnly she heard piano music drifting from the open music store door. Not able to help her self she followed it into the shop to find a man setting at the piano playing ragtime music. He turned to sheridan and smiled. "You like music kid?"She he asked. "Yeah more than air."She she answered.

"Well if you can play me something good kid I will buy some of your papers for some of us in the store." Sheridan smiled. "Sheridan well then move over!" She sat down at the piano and began to play a lively ragtime tune. She played by ear her notes comeing out clean and smooth. When she finished she smiled at the man "maple leaf rag key of g I think."She said.
