(( continued from Rooftop ))
Lucky sat in Tibby's restaurant the next afternoon, squished between David and Boots, clutching David's hand with her own. She smiled at him as Boots and Snipeshooter, who was sitting across the table from him, argued over the last hot dog.
"You look like you didn't get a lot of sleep last night," David commented, noting the dark circles under her eyes.
"I'm fine," Lucky argued, then yawned. David smiled. "I guess I was up late."
"How come?"
"Oh.....some of the guys were playing poker against BJ, and kept shouting whenever she beat them," she lied, turning her face to watch Boots and Snipeshooter to hide the red flush on her cheeks, hoping David wouldn't notice. Luckily, he didn't.
DING! The restaurant door opened behind her, and she squeezed her eyes shut. Please don't be Blink, please don't be Blink, please don't be Blink..... she prayed, just as she'd been doing for the past fifteen minutes, everytime she heard the door open.

It was Blink. He had just finished selling, not having had the flare that he usually had for making up headlines this morning. He didn't make eye contact with Lucky, just walked past her table and sat at a different one as far away as he could. He wanted to avoid her at all costs...seeing her only tempted him and he didn't want to cause anymore trouble than he already had. He sat down and ordered, but only picked at his food when it came. He needed Race to distract him right now, he thought, maybe he would come soon.

"Blink! Why are you sitting all the way over there?" David called across the restaurant, waving him over. "Come over here, be social!"
Lucky stared down at the glass of water in front of her, watching a driplet of water slowly slide down the outside of the glass. She hadn't had much of an apetite.
"It looks like he didn't get a lot of sleep either," David commented to Lucky.
"Yeah....he was....one of the poker players," Lucky lied again, keeping her eyes riveted on the driplet.

Blink felt his ears redden as guilt, shame, regret all flashed through his mind. He couldn't really see a way to get out of this, so he trudged slowly over to the other table, forcing a smile as he sat down. "Hey."

"Hey," David greeted him, flashing him a warm smile. Lucky glanced up and gave him a weak one before lowering her gaze to her and David's hands entertwined in her lap. "How've you been, Blink?" David asked him, completely oblivious to the tension that was continuously mounting between his friend and his girlfriend.

"Great...great..." Blink said. "You?"

"Pretty good. Got plans with Lucky here tonight," David said, looking over and smiling at her. She smiled back, then shooed Boots out of the booth.
"I'm going to head to the little girl's room for a few moments, if you don't mind," she said, sliding out of the booth and heading quickly to the restrooms, breathing a sigh of relief whenever she reached them. She stood in front of the mirror, gazing at herself, then splashed some cool water on her face to calm herself down.
David watched her, and whenever the restroom door closed behind her, he leaned in closer to Blink. "It's a really important date," he said, raising his eyebrows a little bit and tapping his left ring finger, hoping Blink would understand.

Blink raised his eyebrows and fought the twinge of jealousy that swept through him. "That's...That's great David!" he forced another smile.

David smiled and nodded. "I'd been talking to my parents about it yesterday, and I couldn't sleep last night. So I went for a walk, and when I got back home my grandmother's engagement ring was sitting on the kitchen table, with a note from my mother saying that the time was right." He shrugged and patted his pocket. "After we leave here, I'm taking her to Irving Hall to see a show and then to Central Park, where I'll ask her."
Lucky took another deep breath and leaned against the wall, closing her eyes. She needed to take a moment....it was just too tense and awkward out there with both Blink and David.

"Oh, well...congrats buddy," Blink said, clapping David on the back. He looked outside, fighting the wave of emotions that was about to overcome him. Anger, disbelief, disappointment... "Listen David, I gotta go..." he said, rising from his seat. "See ya." he said, walking toward the door.

Lucky took another deep breath and headed out of the restroom, putting on a fake smile.
"What's your rush? You just got here," David called to him as Lucky sat down beside him again, grabbing for his hand.

"I'm meeting Mari somewhere." Blink said. "She wants to talk. I think maybe we're getting back together." His words were true, Mari had left a note under his pillow to meet her in the park later where they had first kissed, but he felt like such a traitor.

Lucky felt a twang of pain pass through her chest. "Have fun," she choked out, smiling weakly. "I hope you two get back together."
"Yeah, me too," David threw in, smiling warmly at his friend.

Blink smiled back. "Me too," he lied. His head ached from holding back emotions and he just wanted to get away. He headed out the door and walked a little ways before darting down an alley, in which he got behind some boxes and slid down to a sitting position against the wall. He sat there in his little hidey hole, not wanting to move, never wanting to leave this one spot. He just wanted to sit back there and die, he knew he couldn't pretend much longer. He stayed there for hours, his head down on his knees, and occasionally threw rocks at a nearby dumpster.

"Come on, let's head to Irving Hall," David said, throwing some money on the table. "The show's going to be starting soon, and I want to get us good seats."
"All right," Lucky said, sliding out of the booth. It was easier to breathe now that Blink had gone. They headed down the sidewalk, the sky growing darker and the streetlights switching on.
